Roman priest elected Pope after Fabian in election delayed 14 months by Decius’ Christian persecutions. Pontificate focus was the treatment of Christians apostasized during the persecution. He condemned lax confessors in not demanding penance of these Christians, but denounced the extreme Rigorists who declared the Church could not pardon the lapsed Christians; he proclaimed that the Church had the authority and power to forgive repentant lapsi, readmitting after proper penances (thus his purple garment). When persecutions resumed in 253, he was exiled to Centum Cellae dying a martyr from the hardships endured there.
