Early successor of St Peter, installed as Pope in 88; 1 of the 5 Apostolic Fathers providing direct link between the Apostles and later generations of church fathers. Contemporary of St Paul, mentioned in Philippians 4:3: “Yes, and I ask you also…to help them, for they have struggled at my side in promoting the gospel, along with Clement and my other co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.” Clement’s 1st Epistle to the Corinthians widely read to the early Church, condemning unauthorized and unjustified division between laity and clergy, urging charity to heal. As pope arrested and condemned to work in the marble quarries, but found many Christians among his fellow convicts and encouraged them; miraculously dug a spring for the convicts where he saw a lamb scraping the soil. Condemned to martyrdom, cast into the sea with an anchor tied to his neck. Relics recovered and deposited in the church of San Clemente. Patron of stone cutters, marble workers, mariners, sailors. Feast Day: November 23
