Joseph Ratzinger was born in 1927 in Lower Bavaria, the son of a police officer, where he developed a devotion to Our Lady of Altötting. His faith and family prepared him for the harsh experiences of the Nazi regime, even seeing his parish priest beaten before celebrating Mass. In 1946 began studies at the University of Munich before he and his brother were ordained together in 1951 at the Cathedral at Freising. Continued studies to become a university professor of dogma and theology, present during all four sessions of Vatican II as a chief theological advisor. In 1977 appointed Bishop of Munich and Freising, and later that year Cardinal. Pope John Paul II appointed him to the Vatican in 1981, where he drafted the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 1992. Appointed Dean of the College of Cardinals in 2002, he presided over the papal elections in April 2005 was elected the 265th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church in 2005. Retired to Pope Emeritus in 2013. Died December 31, 2022.
