A title of The Blessed Virgin Mary initiated by St. Jerome in the 4th c. to empathize Mary’s role as a guiding star for Christians and Gentiles, as the Israelites believed Gentiles came from outside their borders – “the sea.” The Apostleship of the Sea was named after her as seafarers invoke her as a guiding star especially in coastal communities. “Stella Maris” is a “guide” to follow on the way to Christ to avoid capsizing in storm-tossed waters. The ancient prayer, Ave Maris Stella, begins “Hail, O Star of the ocean, God’s own Mother blest…” and is a beautiful reminder of hope and encouragement in storms and trials.
