In 1566-72, Ottoman Turks were a threat to Christian nations, controlling the Mediterranean Sea and raiding coastal cities. The Holy League of Christian powers with Pope Pius V organized a fleet under Don Juan of Austria in 1571 with 206 ships, 80,000 soldiers (facing 230 Turk ships, 120,000 soldiers). On October 7th, Don Juan spied the Turks in the Gulf of Lepanto; that same day, the Rosary Confraternity of Rome prayed for victory. Victorious at the Battle of Lepanto, Christians established the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, later The Most Holy Rosary. Victorius over Satan, she defeats all heresies and is triumphant in military battle.
