On the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord or Candlemas Day, Polish Catholics celebrate “Our Lady of the Thunder Candle” honoring her maternal protection. This tradition is related the blessing of candles that occurs before Mass where traditionally Catholics would take blessed candles home; in Poland, this candle would be called the “Thunder Candle” (Gromnica) primarily lit during storms, as well as to ward off wolves. The Mother of God watches over the people on cold February nights with her thunder candle, warding off the ravenous pack and protecting peasants from harm. The candles are also reminders of the Light of Christ and how Mary can guide up through the darkness of our lives. In Poland, dying persons are given the Gromnica to light their way to eternity, giving them hope that Mary would lead them through their current darkness and into the light of Eternal Light.
