The Roman Catholic Church celebrates this yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (also known by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory”) to honor the 16th c. naval victory known as the Battle of Lepanto, which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. The three Catholic powers (Genoa, Spain, the Papal States) formed the Holy League alliance to defend Christian civilization. As its fleet of 200 ships sailed to confront the 300 Turkish ships near the west coast of Greece on October 7, 1571, crew members prayed the Rosary in preparation for battle, as did Christians throughout Europe instructed by the Pope. Pope St. Pius V was granted a miraculous vision of the League’s stunning victory when all but 13 enemy ships were captured. Attributing the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he instituted this feast. “It has always been the habit of Catholics in danger and in troubled times to fly for refuge to Mary.” – Pope Leo XIII
