The expression “Lady of the Lilies” has its roots in the Canticle of Canticles (2:2). Starting in the 10th c., symbols of the Canticle were applied to Mary including the lily, standing for perfect beauty and purity. The expression lilium inter spinas taken from the Canticle was introduced in the Litany of Loreto (1578) and in the Little Office of the Immaculata (1617). The Chaplet of Our Lady of the Lilies is a rosary with the decades representing 5 lilies (virtues) offered to Blessed Mother: purity, trust, patience, wisdom, love. The example intention for the 1st decade of purity: “The first lily that I give to the Blessed Mother is the virtue of purity. Pray for (name), O Holy Mother of God, that he (she) may grow in purity of mind, body and soul.” Each decade follows with the intention for the next virtue or “lily”.
