In 1192, St. Peter Nolasco took a vow of chastity and gave his wealth to the church to perform works of charity. Inspired to establish an order for the redemption of the Christians seized by the Moors on the seas and in Spain who were cruelly tormented in African prisons to make them deny their faith; European Christians were praying intensely to obtain from God the remedy for the great evil. In 1218, the Virgin Mary appeared to Peter, his confessor and the Spanish king, approving of them establishing The Mercedarian order whose members would deliver these captives and offer themselves for a ransom pledge.
