In the pouring rain on the evening of August 21, 1879, the Knock parish housekeeper noticed a mysterious light illuminating the outside church wall. Three figures were visible - The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared with St. Joseph, and St. John – along with The Lamb of God standing on an altar before a cross surrounded by angels. For two hours, no words were spoken as the Blessed Mother stood with her eyes toward Heaven and 15 witnesses kneeled praying their Rosaries. Pilgrims began to visit the poor rural church and healings occurred. The Church of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland opened in 1976, named a basilica in 1979 by Pope John Paul II.
