Known as the Black Madonna from the darkening of Mary’s face over the centuries of candle smoke illuminating the icon. Legend has it painted by St Luke on a piece of cedar tabletop built by St Joseph. St Helen found the painting in Jerusalem in search of the true cross and gave it to Constantine. When Constantinople was invaded by the Saracens, the people’s prayers to Mary saved the city, beginning a great devotion to her through this painting. In 1382 in the possession of Prince Ladislaus, with Tartars invading the palace, an arrow hit the painting, lodging in Mary’s throat. For safety the prince took the painting to his birthplace of Opala; on the journey he stayed at Czestochowa, Poland but the next morning the horse-drawn wagon with the painting wouldn’t move. Taking this as a sign, the prince placed the icon in the care of the Polish monastery (Mount of Light) there, where it remains to this day. In 1430 the painting was twice struck by a Hussite invader’s sword (to Mary’s face), but the 3rd time he was struck dead. She again interceded for the monastery in 1655 against 12,000 invaders. Patron of Poland. Feast Day: August 26
