The Blessed Virgin Mary first appeared in Donglu Village in 1900 at the time of the Boxer Rebellion. 40,000 Boxers attacked the village where 700 Christians and 9000 refugees had organized a defense. Four times the Boxers attacked and were repelled with losses; they returned a month later with backup, trying 44 times unsuccessfully. The village survived with minor casualties. The Boxers who converted reported they were frightened most by the Lady in White who often appeared above Donglu along with a fiery horseman (believed to be St. Michael). The local church became a pilgrimage site in 1924 with an image of Our Lady, Queen of China dedicated by Pope Pius XI in 1928.
