On Sunday July 16th, 1251, as Simon Stock knelt in prayer on Mt Carmel – the place where Elijah prayed to God for the salvation of Israel – Our Lady appeared to him, holding the Child Jesus and the Brown Scapular saying, “This shall be the privilege for you and all the Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall be saved.” The Brown Scapular is one of the most popular Catholic devotions. The sacramental is a miniature Carmelite brown scapular, the sleeveless outer garment worn as a sign of their vocation and devotion. To obtain the benefits of the Scapular once must wear it, observe chastity according to their state in life; and pray the Rosary.
