In 1717 the villagers of Guaratinqueta, Brazil were planning a feast to honor incoming dignitaries. Three fishermen prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception for a good catch; sadly, they were unsuccessful all day. In their last cast, a lone headless terracotta statue of the Blessed Virgin emerged; casting again, the head of the statue was caught. On an impulse, they lowered their nets one more time, this catch bulging with fish. They continued until their boats were full. They restored the statue, cleaning it as it was darkened from the river, and giving it the name Aparecida, “she who appeared.” Devotion spread over 15 years; a humble chapel was replaced by a larger one where miracles took place. On September 8, 1904, the image was crowned and dressed in a gold embroidered robe. The present Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida is the largest Marian shrine in the world and the 2nd largest basilica (to St. Peters in Rome), holding 45,000.
