Uriah was a Hittite who converted his religion and nationality to worship the God of Israel, his name meaning “light of Yahweh” or “flame of God.” He joins Israel’s army to become one of King David’s 37 elite soldiers, based on special achievements in previous battles. He was very faithful to his duties, to God, the king, his army commander and to Israel at large; in so doing, he will fight his own people, the Hittites, an enemy of Israel. When David tried to take him off his duties at war and bring him home to his wife, he protests saying he can’t do so while leaving “the ark, Israel and Judah dwelling in tents” in open fields of battle. Even when the king made him drunk, he refused to return home and returned to his troops. Because David desired Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba, he sent Uriah into battle with a letter to his lord Joab; the letter gave instructions on how to kill Uriah. He delivered the sealed letter with his fate. Uriah was assigned by Joab to fight at the front of the hottest battle to his death (2 Samuel 11:15-21).
