1 Samuel begins with his barren mother asking for a child from God; “the Lord remembered her” and she became pregnant. Named Samuel (The Lord hears), she gave him to the high priest Eli to present to God at Shiloh where the Ark of the Covenant was guarded; dedicated to the Lord as a child, he never cuts his hair. Grew in God’s favor, becoming a priest; one night heard God speaking to him, beginning his covenant as a prophet. Last judge and first prophet (after Moses), his ministry renews words from the Lord and begins the prophetic books of the Bible. Rallied Israel to fight the Philistines and had two sons, Joel and Abijah, who were to become judges after him but were corrupt. Thus ended the period of 12 judges (established after Joshua died in the absence of government) as the people asked for a king; Samuel anointed Saul the first king of Israel and David as his successor. After his death, the only ghost in the Bible appearing to Saul. Remembered for his prayers and leading the greatest Passover celebration.
