In Joshua 2, before the Israelites cross the Jordan and the conquest of Canaan, Joshua sends out scouts to Jericho, the most important Canaanite fortress city in the Jordan Valley (also the principal seat of idol worship and the vilest and most degrading in the religion of the Canaanites). The spies stay in Jericho with Rahab, a Canaanite harlot and midwife where they gather information. When the king hears of the spies and comes for them, Rahab says they have left. However, she hides them under flax drying on her roof, letting them escape with a rope out of her window in the town wall – she only requests her family be spared when Israel attacks the city. The spies give her a red rope to hang out her window and instruct her family to wait inside their house. Only Rahab’s household was spared and became part of the new Israel – and the first recorded Gentile convert. She married Salmon, an Israelite from the tribe of Judah; their son was Boaz, the husband of Ruth, the great-grandmother of King David.
