The younger and beautiful daughter of Laban, the wife of Jacob, she becomes the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, who become two of the 12 tribes of Israel (Gen 35: 24, 46: 15-18). When Jacob goes to Mesopotamia to find a wife, he meets the shepherdess Rachel at a well while watering her flock. Falling in love, he arranges to work for her father Laban for seven years for her bride wealth to marry her. Through Laban’s deception, he ends up working 14 years for her hand, but they are married. Like Sarah and Rebekah before her, Rachel experiences a long period of barrenness, unable to have children. After many years of trials and tribulations, God provides two sons to Rachel, but she dies young while bearing her second child, Benjamin. The Prophet Jeremiah had a vision of her still mourning, grieving her lost children; this served as an effective intercession, for God promised to reward her efforts and return her children (Jer 31:15-21). “Mother Rachel” was celebrated as a powerful intercessor for the people of Israel.
