In the book of Ruth, Naomi and her husband, Elimilech, were God’s people living in Bethlehem sometime between the judges Jephthah and Samson. Elimilech (“My God is King”) decides to move his family out of the Promised Land to Moab because of a severe famine. Naomi’s husband died and left her with sons, who broke the Mosaic law and took Moabite women as their wives, Orpah and Ruth (Israelites were not to intermarry with foreign women). After 10 years, her sons died; Naomi returns to Bethlehem with Ruth, trekking up to 70 miles. Upon her return, Naomi blames all her problems on God, “The Lord’s hand has turned against me.” Moabite Ruth seems to believe in Naomi’s God more than Naomi, laboring in the wheat fields to support the two of them. There Ruth meets Boaz, who marry and provide Naomi with her first grandchild. “Naomi took the child, placed him on her lap, and took care of him.” They named him Obed, who became the father of Jesse, the father of David in the line of Christ.
