Naboth was a Jezreelite with a vineyard near the wicked King Ahab’s palace (1 Kings 21). The king wanted to buy his vineyard to make a vegetable garden, but Naboth refused to give up the inherited land from his fathers at any price. God had commanded that a family’s inheritance not be sold: “The land must not be sold permanently” (Lev 25:23) and “No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors” (Num 36:7). The king ws angered; ignoring the law, Queen Jezebel intended to get the land by any means, creating a plot against Naboth. Forging letters from the king, she directed the elders to “proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth prominently”. Two scoundrels falsely accused him of cursing God and the king, convicting Naboth to be stoned to death outside the city; the land was given to the king but Jezebel had used the law with a murderous intent. God condemned them both though a visit from the prophet Elijah.
