The Bible prophetess Miriam, Moses’ sister, is first mentioned in Exodus 2. During this time, the Israelites were exiles in Egypt when a new pharaoh, fearing the growing Israelite population, instructs Egyptians to throw Hebrew boys into the Nile River. When Amram and Jochebed had a son, “she took a papyrus basket, putting the child in it, placed it among the reeds on the bank of the Nile. His sister stationed herself at a distance to find out what would happen to him.” After witnessing Pharaoh’s daughter pull the child out, Miriam offered her mother as a nursemaid. Years later with Moses leading the Exodus, after the parting of the Red Sea, Miriam encourages the women to join her in praise to God: “then the prophet Miriam, took a tambourine in her hand, dancing…Sing to the Lord, for He is gloriously triumphant; horse and chariot He has cast into the sea.” Lost in the wilderness, she doubts Moses and God and is struck with leprosy; Moses askes God for her healing which occurs seven days later.
