The prophet Micah was born near the border of Philistia and Judah about 25 miles southwest of Jerusalem. Dwelling in an agricultural area, he lived outside the governmental centers of power, leading to his strong concern for the lowly and less fortunate; therefore, he directed much of his prophecy to the powerful leaders of Samaria and Jerusalem. As a contemporary of Isaiah and Hosea, he prophesied during the momentous years around the tragic fall of Israel to the Assyrian Empire (722 BC), an event he predicted. During this period, Israel was imploding from evil leadership and Judah was fluctuating between good and evil kings. The book of Micah provides one of the most significant prophesies of Christ’s birth some 700 years prior to His birthplace in Bethlehem and to His eternal nature with a future kingdom. Much of his book revolves around two significant predictions: judgment on Israel and Judah, and the restoration of God’s people in the millennial kingdom through salvation and mercy.
