Genesis 14 identifies Melchizedek as king of Salem (later Jerusalem) and priest of God Most High who blesses Abram in the name of God, serving bread and wine; Abram tithes 1/10th of his battle loot after defeating 5 kings. He was not a priest of Israel as Abram had no children yet; Levites (Aaronic line) become a priestly tribe four centuries later. Psalm 110 states “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek” after describing the victory and glory of the Messiah. “The order of” points to lineage (Melchizedek v Aaron); unlike the priesthood of Aaron (idolatry, abuse, didn’t last), Melchizedek’s priesthood lasts forever. Hebrews 5-7 notes the eternal nature of the order, quoting the Psalm verse to the supremacy of Jesus as the Great High Priest, using Melchizedek’s role to illustrate Jesus’ priesthood and kingship. Melchizedek has no genealogy – appearing to transcend earthly existence making him a type of Christ who truly is eternal King-Priest with no predecessor or successor in His high office.
