Son of King David and Bathsheba, at 12 anointed 3rd king of Israel by David over his older brother Adonijah in 967BC, his peaceful kingdom extending from the Euphrates River to Egypt. Removed potential enemies and appointed friends to key posts. Accumulated enormous wealth and many wives. Known for his wisdom and writing the biblical books Song of Songs, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Wisdom; surrounding nations noted his wisdom including the Queen of Sheba from Arabia who held trade routes with him. Built the First Holy Temple in Jerusalem for the Ark of the Covenant to rest, made of stone and cedar wood, covered in gold and completed in 7 years; then his own palace in 13 years. Extended Jerusalem to the north and created walled fortified cities. Life story is told in Kings I and Chronicles II. Downfall came in old age with many foreign wives who worshiped other gods, and under heavy taxation his people grew bitter. Dying after 40 years as king, his son Rehoboam succeeded and divided the kingdom into 2 parts.
