In the Books of Samuel, David, the son of Jesse, is a young shepherd who gains fame first as a musician and later by killing the enemy champion Goliath with a slingshot. A great warrior and “a man after God’s own heart,” he is anointed King of Israel, takes the Ark of the Covenant into the city of Jerusalem, and establishes it as the nation’s capital. Because David shed much blood, God denies him the opportunity to build the temple, passing it onto his son and successor, Solomon. He is the forefather of a future Messiah – Jesus will come through the line of David - and many psalms are
ascribed to him.
