Her name meaning “Jewish woman,” she is an Old Testament biblical heroine in the Book of Judith. With the Assyrians cutting off the Jews’ water supply and their leaders ready to surrender, she creates a secret plan that “will go down through all generations of our descendants.” With her maid and dressed in fine clothes, jewels, and tiara, she travels to Holofernes, the Assyrian army leader. Entranced by her beauty, he becomes drunk; she beheads him with his own sword, puts his head in a sack, and returns it to Uzziah, the Israeli leader, who proclaims Judith “blessed by the Most High God
above all other women on earth.”
