From the Book of Genesis, the 4th of six sons of Jacob and Leah and the founder of the Tribe of Judah of the Israelites - by extension, the Kingdom of Judah, the land of Judea, and the word Jew. Through Judah (whose name means “thanksgiving” or “praise”) would come a powerful line of kings, a nation of its own right, and the salvation of the world in Jesus Christ. Jacob declares “Judah, your brothers shall praise you…Judah is a lion’s cub; from the prey you have gone up…The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet.” (Gen 49: 8-10). However, initially, Judah is an angry young man, with bitterness from family circumstances and a hardened heart, suggesting his brother Joseph be sold into slavery. He marries a Canaanite woman against God’s will; his indifference continues into adulthood until God sends another woman, Tamar, to convict him of his wickedness. His transformation is documented when he offers himself to protect his youngest brother Benjamin in Egypt.
