One of the Old Testament patriarchs, successor to Moses after his death and commissioned by God to lead the Israelites into Canaan and distribute the promised land to the 12 tribes of Israel. The Book of Joshua recounts his victories at Jericho (marched the Ark of the Covenant around the city for 7 days with trumpets), Ai and other places. The perfect disciple, obedient and humble and devoted to Moses, always stationed at the entrance to his tent, only entering when called. Moses was confident in him, as Joshua knows neither fear nor doubt. When ordered to cross into the Canaanite frontier before the Israelites, Joshua takes 40 days and returns with a detailed account for Moses and encouragement for the lamenting tribes; he and Caleb are the only 2 of 12 scouts rewarded for their hope in the Promised Land. Legend has he married, had daughters, died at 110.
