Ruth 4 first mentions Jesse, the son of Obed, the grandson of Boaz and Ruth, and father of King David. In 1 Samuel we learn he is a sheep farmer from the people of Ephrath from Bethlehem, one of the smallest clans in the tribe of Judah. No leadership position or prophetic anointing, he is a regular Israelite with 8 sons and 2 daughters. In 1 Sam 16, the Lord sends Samuel on assignment to anoint the next king of Israel from one of Jesse’s eight sons. After seeing the 7 older sons, Samuel finds the youngest David tending the sheep; he anoints him with oil as the future King of Israel whose throne will be established forever (2 Sam 7). Jesus is the root that would come up from the stump of Jesse prophesied in Isaiah 11: “Shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” Also foretold in Micah 5: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
