Son of Isaac and Rebecca, twin brother of Esau, husband of Rachel and Leah, father of the 12 sons who became the ancestors of the 12 tribes of Israel. As the second son who wanted the birthright of older brother Esau, he traded hungry Esau with soup for the birthright and afterwards, fled. Traveling he had a strange dream: a ladder reaching from earth to heaven with angels going up and down. God stood beside him, stating this land should be his with innumerable descendants. Awakening he knew God was in this place; he built an altar, calling it Bethel. Later at a well he meets the shepherdess Rachel he would marry after 14 years of service. He desires to return to his homeland with his family and flock, but is concerned about Esau’s response. One night, a solitary man wrestles with him, fighting all night without victory; struck in his thigh with a dislocated hip, Jacob demands a blessing. The stranger gives him the name Israel; Jacob knew he had seen God face-to-face and lived. Esau welcomes him home.
