One of the 12 tribes of Israel, the 9th son of Jacob with Leah. In Hebrew means “man of reward” or “hired man” due to the circumstances of his birth. After the birth of her 4th son, Judah, Leah was presumed barren; however, her older son Reuben found mandrakes in the field, a flowering herb for enhancing fertility, helping her conceive Issachar (Gen 30:14-18). He fathered four sons: Tola, Puah, Jashub and Shimron and escaped the famine by relocating to Egypt with his family where he died; later his body was moved to Shechem with the patriarchs (Acts 7:16). Like his brothers, received a blessing from Jacob: “Issachar is a rawboned donkey lying down among the sheep pens. When he sees how good is his resting place and how pleasant is his land, he will bend his shoulder to the burden and submit to forced labor.” (Gen 49:14-15). Shares a border and close connection with the tribe of Zebulon, noted by Moses: “Rejoice, Zebulon, on your going out, and you, Issachar, in your tents.” Deut 33: 18-19.
