His prophetic call in 740 BC appears at a critical moment in Israel’s history. King Uzziah of Judah has died and in the Temple Isaiah is granted a vision of the Lord, exalted and enthroned in majesty. Seraphim angels minister to Him calling out “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of host,” shaking the sanctuary. Overwhelmed, he is stricken with fear, “Woe is me…I am lost…I am a man of unclean lips” (Isa 6:3-5). At this point, one of seraphim approaches him with “a burning coal” taken with tongs from the fires of the Temple altar, touching his mouth and melting away his fears. When the Lord asks who He can send as a prophet to His people, Isaiah steps up: “Here I am! Send me.” The Northern Kingdom would collapse under Assyrians in 722 BC and the siege of Jerusalem followed in 701 BC. With sobering accounts of Israel’s sin, warnings of judgment, and hope, he predicts the coming of a Messiah, “Immanuel,” who will redeem God’s people from their sins –fulfilled in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.
