When Nebuchadnezzar ruled Israel Daniel, Hannaniah, Azariah and Mishael (names changed to Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego) were called into training (Daniel 1). The four didn’t eat the king’s food or drink, but only vegetables and water; God gave them “knowledge and proficiency in all literature and wisdom.” When the king’s wise men failed to interrupt his terrible dreams and were killed, he called on Daniel (who asked his 3 friends to pray for God’s assistance). Daniel succeeded, given leadership in Babylon and his 3 friends administrative roles. The king built a large gold statue for all to worship; the 3 friends refused the decree. Angry the king threatened them with a white hot furnace (7x the normal heat). Faithful to God, the friends were cast in offering praise and prayer to God, remaining unharmed; the angel of the Lord (who “looked like the son of God” to the king) went into the furnace, quelching the flames. The king promoted the friends and called for all to convert to the Lord.
