Feast Day: December 9

12c. BC Holy prophetess whose marriage to Elkanah was barren, causing him to remarry for heirs. Hannah grieved bitterly and prayer fervently in the temple over her misfortune. Learning of her story, the priest Eli gave her a blessing; she conceived and bore Samuel meaning “God heard” and vowed to dedicate him to God. At the age of boyhood, she presented him to the priest Eli where Samuel remained with to serve before the Tabernacle. When making annual sacrifices at the temple, Hannah would visit her son to give him a new robe she made for him as he grew. Samuel would become the high priest (censer) who would crown both King Saul and King David, and one of the most pivotal figures in Israel’s history. Hannah’s prayer of thanksgiving (1 Sam 2:1-11) is an archetype of Mary’s Magnificat.
