One of the 12 minor prophets of the Bible, Habakkuk (“embraced”) likely prophesied in 609-598 BC, a contemporary of Jeremiah; thought to be God’s gift of a son to the Shunammite woman in 2 Kings that took in Elisha. Either trained in the Law of Moses in a prophetic school (emerged after Samuel) or a priest involved with the worship of God at the temple. Prophecy was directed to a world that through the eyes of God’s people must have seemed on the edge of disaster. His book contains an extended dialogue between him and God – a conversation initiated by the prophet based on his distress about God’s “inaction” in the world, wanting to see God do something particularly in the area of justice for evildoers; channeled his frustration into prayers and eventually praise to God; The Lord answered with the Babylonians executing justice on the wicked in Judah on His behalf. Believed to play stringed instrument, his final chapter is a prayer in the form of a song praising the Lord with instructions for playing.
