In 1 Kings 19, Elisha was plowing in a field when Elijah threw his cloak on him as his successor; he kissed his parents goodbye, burned the plow and used the fire to cook his oxen, leaving his past life behind. Before Elijah was taken to heaven Elisha asked him, “May I receive a double portion of your spirit.” (2 Kings 2) and his rolled mantle passed onto him. His miracles include the purification of Jericho’s bad water and the widows’ oil: when a destitute widow came to him with creditors threatening to take her children as slaves, he multiplied the oil until she was able to pay off her debt. When a prominent barren couple was hospitable to him, He asked God to bring them a child; when the son died, Elisha revived him. When Naaman, the Aram army commander had leprosy, Elisha told him to bath in the Jordan seven times; reluctant he did and was cured. On his deathbed he used a bow and arrow to prophesy about Israel-Aram relations. After his death, a dead man cast into Elisha’s grave was revived by touching his bones.
