Prophet of God sent to northern kingdom of Israel during reign of King Ahab to call the people back from Baal worship to covenant with God. His prophecies begin with a plague of no rain for three years; now a hunted man, he hides near a brook where God sends ravens to bring him food. Invited to stay with a starving widow and her son, God keeps the food flowing; when the son dies, Elijah raises him to life. After the Yahweh-Baal contest and the prophets of Baal are killed, the rain resumes but he flees for his life, feeling he has failed as God’s prophet. An angel directs him on a 40-day journey to Mount Horeb, where God arrives in a “gentle whisper,” encouraging and giving instructions. Elijah gives 3 commissions: Hazael (next Aram king), Jehu (next Israel king) and Elisha (his prophetic successor). Returning to Israel to confront King Ahab, he is rescued through fire from heaven; after passing his prophetic mantle to Elisha, he is brought up into heaven without dying on a chariot of fire, disappearing in a whirlwind.
