Name meaning “like the heart,” he and Joshua with 10 other men sent to spy on Canaan, the land God promised to the Israelites. 10 of the 12 spies saw only the fearsome giants and not the blessings, doubting the Israelites strong enough to claim the land with its fortified cities. Caleb countered saying, “We should go and take possession of the land for we can certainly do it. The land is exceedingly good. If the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into that land and give it to us. Do not be afraid of them.” Caleb and Joshua saw a land overflowing with milk and honey, bringing back grapes, figs and pomegranates on their staffs. God blessed their faith in His promises, calling Caleb “my servant” (similar to Abraham and Moses). God judged the people making them wait 40 years to enter the land, but anyone over 20 years old would die in the desert except Caleb and Joshua. “My servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly. I will bring him into the land and his descendants will inherit it.”
