12th tribe and last son of Jacob and his mother Rachel, and the younger full-brother of Joseph. Dying during childbirth, Rachel names him Ben-Oni “son of my sorrow”. However, so as not to remember the sorrowful death of Rachel, Jacob changed his name to Benjamin “son of my right hand”…“very dear to me, set on my right hand for a blessing, the support of my age, like the staff in my right hand.” When Jacob’s older 10 sons were jealous of his love for Joseph, sending him away to Egypt and telling Jacob he had died, Jacob clung to his youngest son, Benjamin, whom he loved deeply. When the famine hit, he sent those 10 sons to Egypt to beg for food, but kept Benjamin “lest some calamity befall him…and you would bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.” Later when Joseph is reunited with his family, “he fell on his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.” Joseph gives to Benjamin above the other brothers with five times the food, five new sets of clothing and 300 silver pieces.
