Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all consider Abraham the patriarch of their faith. Abram, the son of Terah, is born in Ur in Mesopotamia and raised in Haran. Upon Terah’s death, Abram receives a vision to migrate to Canaan where God makes a covenant that he will have a landholding here for all time. With his wife Sarai, nephew Lot, and a household caravan they explore the area before famine forces them to Egypt and they migrate back to Hebron. Concerned about his lineage, he is promised a son with Sarai, sealed with changing his name to Abraham and hers to Sarah: “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so, will your descendants be.” (Gen 15:5). Their son, Isaac, is born to inherit the covenant. In Gen 22 God instructs Abraham to take his beloved Isaac up Mt Moriah to offer him as a sacrifice; Isaac helps his father gather the wood and set the place. As Abraham grabs his knife, God stops him, supplying a ram to sacrifice instead. Died at 175 and buried with Sarah in a cave (Machpelah).
