Elder brother of Moses and Miriam and husband of Elisheva, he acts as Moses’ spokesperson to Pharaoh and the Israelites; God speaks to Moses who gives the message to Aaron to convey. Performed miracles on God’s behalf including turning his staff into a snake that brought about the first three plagues. After the golden calf incident, God forgave the people and commanded a tabernacle be built in which Aaron served as High Priest; afterwards, all priests would be descendants of Aaron with God’s miraculous sprouting of Aaron’s staff. A pursuer of peace, he tried to reconcile contention amongst others. After Moses and Aaron sinned by not speaking to the rock to bring water as God commanded, both were prevented from entering the Holy Land. Buried in a cave at Mount Hor, his date of death is the only one recorded in the Torah. The High Priesthood and priestly garments (breastplate of judgement, blue Upper Robe, Ephod garment) were transferred to his son, Elazar.
