Born Rita Rizzo in 1923 in Canton, OH, her parents divorced when she was 6, leaving her and her mother in poverty. Suffering severe stomach pains as a teenager, she visited a local woman attributed with miraculous healings who gave her a novena to St. Therese and she was healed, beginning her desire for a vocation. At 21 she entered the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration as Sr. Mary Angelica of the Annunciation. After a back injury and facing possible paralysis, she promised God that if healed, she would build him a monastery in the South. Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Irondale, AL was founded with the sisters selling fishing lures and roasted peanuts! A charismatic speaker, her faith talks reached radio (1971) and eventually television; with 12 cloistered nuns and $200 she trusted in Divine Providence and launched a faithful Catholic media apostolate in the monastery garage, EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network) in 1981. Retiring in 2002 due to a stroke, she died in 2016.
