Born to a wealthy family of Huy (Liege) in 1158, her father a tax collector who wasn’t religious but was close to the bishop. Desiring religious life she was forced to marry at 13, but widowed by 18 with three children (one dying as an infant). Beautiful with many suitors but uninterested, she gave generously to the poor; her father took her two sons away and went to the bishop insisting she remarry. Seeing her humility and devotion, he agreed to her holy widowhood, allowing her to volunteer at a leper hospital for the next 11 years. The last 36 years of her life she lived as an anchoress (enclosed in a walled chapel cell) with many mystical experiences and miracles ascribed to her. She succeeded in bringing her father and one of her two sons back to the faith and countless people who flocked to consult her. Died at 70. Patron of brides, widows
