He grew up on an Oklahoma farm before he was ordained in 1964 and sent to the diocesan mission in Guatemala. Surrounded by extreme poverty, he served his mission as a priest celebrating Mass and translating the bible in the native language; he also helped in the fields and built irrigation systems. When civil war raged between militarist government and guerrillas, priests were on a death list, so he was sent back to OK but returned saying, “the shepherd cannot run.” Within a few months, he was killed in July 1981 in the rectory, the first martyr born in the US and first US priest beatified. The mission community requested his heart remain there where it is enshrined.
