Born in 1891 in Guadalupe, Mexico, he followed his sister into religious life, starting his Jesuit novitiate in Mexico, before continuing his studies in California, Spain and Belgium for his ordination in 1925. Suffering from severe stomach problems without a cure, he was allowed to return to Mexico, despite grave religious persecutions. Churches were closed and priests were in hiding. He spent the rest of his life in secret ministry, procuring alms for the poor and administering the sacraments in disguises including a beggar, a policeman, and a businessman with a fresh flower on his lapel, always filled with joy of serving Christ his King. Became a wanted man after falsely accused in bombing attempt on a former Mexican president. Betrayed by police, he was sentenced to death without legal process. On the day of his execution, he forgave his executioners, prayed, and bravely refused the blindfold, proclaiming, “Viva Cristo Rey!”
