Born in 1632 in Normandy, France, raised by her grandparents who offered hospitality to the poor. At age 3 expresses a strong desire to do God’s will, at age 5 has strong mystical prayer experiences, at age 8 understands the Holy Spirit is calling her to be a saint, and at 10 writes a note giving herself to “Lady Mary.” A witty and attractive girl, at 12 she enters a community of Augustinian nuns, Hospital Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus. At 15 she offers herself for the Canada missions, promising, “to live and die in Canada if God’s will opens the door.” Made her solemn profession in 1648 and sets sail for Canada. Learned the languages of the people and cared for the sick, adopts recently martyred St. Jean de Brebeuf as role model. Took on leadership in her community and the hospital despite her health problems. In 1658 she offers herself in a spirit of reparation for the salvation of New France, promising to work for “everything that I know to be most perfect and for the greater glory of God.” Dies in Canada in 1668.
