Born in 1266 at Duns in Scotland, a descendant of a wealthy farming family (Scotia is Latin for Scotland). One of the most influential Franciscans, he received the habit of the Friars Minor at Dumfries where his uncle Elias Duns was superior. Studying at Oxford and Paris, ordained in 1291, before returning to lecture at Oxford and Cambridge. He pointed out the richness of the Augustinian-Franciscan tradition, appreciated the wisdom of Aquinas, Aristotle and the Muslim philosphers and still managed to be an independent thinker. He returned to Paris to receive his doctorate in 1305 and continued teaching there. In 1307 he so ably defended the Immaculate Conception of Mary that the university officially adopted his position. That same year he was assigned the minister general to the Franciscan school at Cologne where he died in 1308. Founder of the Scotistic School in Theology, also known for his theology on the Absolute Kingship of Jesus Christ and his philosophic refutation of evolution.
