Born of the prominent d’Aza family and marrying Felix de Guzman, they had five children. A pious woman known for prayer life and generosity to the poor, when her two eldest sons entered the priesthood, she prayed at nearby St. Dominic Silos church for another son for the family’s succession. In a dream, the church’s patron saint appeared foretelling of a son who would be a shining light to the Church; another dream had a dog leaping from her womb carrying a torch in its mouth, lighting the world on fire. Naming her new son Dominic, his godmother saw a star shining from his forehead at his baptism. Raising him in sanctity and virtue, she entrusted him to the education of a priest at 7, foregoing a male heir. St. Dominic went on to found the Dominicans known as the “Hounds of the Lord” for their defense of the Catholic faith.
