Feast Day: May 13
Born in 1322 to one of oldest families in Bologna, her father Count Igano Lambertini, her mother Castora Galuzzi. Even as a tiny child she showed unusual piety, taking delight in prayer. By her own wish, she was placed in the Dominican convent at 9 to be trained by the nuns. Her disposition endeared her to all, with a burning desire to receive the Holy Eucharist after the required age of 12: “Tell me, can anyone receive Jesus into his heart and not die?” When 11 at Ascension Day Mass with the nuns, they were startled to see a Sacred Host hovering in the air above Imelda as she knelt before the closed tabernacle in prayer. Quickly, the priest rushed with a paten to receive it and in the face of such a miracle, gave Imelda her first communion. She returned to the pew to pray, remaining after Mass. When a nun came to get her for supper, she found her still kneeling with a smile on her face; however, the rapture of receiving her Lord was so great, she had passed.
