Born in France in 1838 to a prosperous farming family. Ordained a Franciscan priest and sent to the Holy Land for 12 years to maintain services in the Holy Sepulcher and the Church of the Nativity. Built the church St Catherine in Bethlehem and revived walking the Stations of the Cross through the streets of Jerusalem (Via Dolorosa). Moved to Canada in 1888, helping develop the shrine of Our Lady at Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec where he was one of 3 witnesses to the Miracle of the Eyes - a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary which came to life - an event that changed his life. Helped erect several life-size Ways of the Cross in Canada (one at the Sanctuary of the Reparation in Montreal). Collected many sacred relics from the Holy Land and brought to Canada, known as a ”Miracle Worker.” Also known as “God’s peddle,” a prolific writer he traveled the countryside preaching Marian devotion and Franciscan ideals, selling his books and donating profits to the poor. Died of stomach cancer in 1916.
